Interview with
Nicholas Daley
about Fashion needs Music

Music is a reflection of attitude towards life.

“To be honest, I spend most of my time in my studio. Everything is fast-paced in the fashion industry. As soon as you as finish a collection you must move onto the next. So when I hang out with my musician friends who collaborate with me, they either come over to my studio or I go see them play live. You’ll find loads of great gigs by the best up-and-coming bands in a district called Peckham in south London. I also frequent Café OTO and Village Underground in east London. Going to live concerts give me inspiration for silhouettes and textures. Recently more and more musicians have started to commission me to design their custom clothes too,” says Delay. Thanks to his love of music, his community keeps growing. He was planning on going to a concert on the day of this interview; the inspirations and knowledge he absorbs from his everyday life are then funneled into his brand.

Lastly, we asked Daley to explain the relationship between fashion and music in his own terms: “It’s difficult to explain in words. Music and fashion have a long history. Like Don Letts said in Silver Magazine’s first publication, British music and fashion are interconnected, they are inseparable. Even Don Letts was working at a vintage clothing store called Acme Attraction across the Vivian Westwood store before becoming a musician. Michael Jackson and David Bowie were both musicians, but they had distinct styles which became fashion. Even today there are many designers who reference their styles. This is why I think fashion and music are interconnected. I’m a fashion designer who graduated from a fashion school, so this may sound funny; but I feel a strong sense of fashion, or shall I say style, in culture and music. My brand doesn’t simply chase after trends. I create clothes with attitude. For me, music represents one of my attitudes towards life.”
